What Is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a natural state of heightened awareness which opens the mind to beneficial suggestions. It makes use of the imagination and creativity to help bring about positive change. We all self hypnotize at different times, all those times you caught yourself on autopilot, or realized you had completely zoned out, they were states of hypnosis. You had temporarily blocked out your surroundings and had lost yourself for awhile in something else, many people do this whilst reading a book, listening to music, meditating, praying etc. The focus of your mind had been narrowed down to a specific thing in order to fully concentrate.

Whilst in a hypnotic state beneficial suggestions, which I will call seeds of change are much more readily accepted, I call them seeds of change because it is these same suggestions that can empower you to change your life for the better. These seeds of change are planted into your sub-conscious mind and they start to grow, you water them by way of changing habits and continued listening to the script until you have mastered your change. Once you have accomplished your goal, which could be anything from losing weight to stopping smoking or getting on a plane, you may find you just need to listen to the scripts occasionally just to remind yourself and re-affirm what you have accomplished and keep yourself on the right track.

Here, I haven’t included music, music with repetitive loops work well, in other words, music that repeats certain rhythms; however, you don’t need music and as music is such a personal thing I decided it would be better to leave it out. All you need to do is get yourself into a relaxed state; that could be as you are falling asleep, meditating or simply relaxing on the sofa, and when you feel yourself deeply relaxed, listen to the desired script. You don’t need to keep repeatedly listening to the script as once is enough if you are relaxed but you will need to listen to them daily, however, if you want to listen to them more than once a day that is fine to. I have kept the scripts short, because usually, much of a hypnotherapy script is taken up with relaxing the client and then bringing them back into the room and ensuring they are ready to go.

Here, it is your responsibility to learn how to relax and to take responsibility for your self hypnosis. If you ever have any doubt as to what any script is going to be implanting into you, always listen to it first whilst not in a completely relaxed state. True hypnosis only offers beneficial changes and it never makes you cluck like a chicken, that is simply stage hypnosis for entertainment purposes and just so that you know – those that cluck like chickens when told to, it isn’t because they have been made to, it is because they are choosing to! But hey………..….if you want that, you go ahead and cluck, cluck away!

Hypnosis is considered a hypnotic trance, but a trance is not like the mummies in the old late night movies, you are still aware and can bring yourself out at any time, just like you do after loosing yourself in a book.

I hope you enjoy this section of the website and that you get something beneficial out of it.

Blessings – Kenzo

What is a Trance?

Trance, is a word usually related to Hypnosis, and unfortunately, quite often in a negative manner. It has also been related to Native American Indians in relation to Shaman’s going into a drug induced trance in order to reach the other side. This type of explanation has brought a lot of mis-construed ideas coupled with a lot of negative association towards the word trance. Whilst the above may be true for some, for many, being in a trance is being in an altered state of consciousness without it being induced by drugs.

There are said to be two main types of trance; a Meditative Trance and a Hypnotic Trance – the two reach the same sub-conscious part of our brain but are brought about by different actions.

A trance is a state of disassociation brought on by a repeated behaviour, otherwise known as a Repetitive Cognitive Loop. You go into a trance state because it is not necessary for your conscious mind to put all of its cognitive resources into maintaining a repetitive activity. A factory worker may just go through the motions of packing boxes – they have disassociated due to the Repetitive Cognitive Loop, they have gone into a trance. Day dreaming is also a trance state, which is brought on by a Repetitive Cognitive Loop.

Any time you go into a trance your mind is divided into two parts, the observing you and the automatic you. When you walk down the street you do not have to think about how to walk, you automatically disassociate with walking and just do it, because you’ve done this activity many, many times before, so only very little consciousness is required. The same for when you drive the car, it is an automatic response, you can disassociate from it because you have done it for so long.

Once in a trance, the observing you is then free to think, dream, create, accept positive suggestions etc.

The difference between a Meditative Trance and a Hypnotic Trance is what causes the Trance Generating Loop or Repetitive Cognitive Loop. If the Loop is connected to a stimulus outside of your mind, like the voice of a Hypnotist, a clock, music, or from listening or speaking Mantra’s etc, that is a Hypnotic Trance. If the Loop is completely inside your mind, such as repeating a mantra to yourself, or focusing on silence, that is a Meditative Trance.

Levels of Trance

Beta Level:
This level is the level we use when using machinery, you are fully present, focused, your mind is not permitted to wander as it could be dangerous – there is no room for day-dreaming you have to be alert.

Alpha Level:
This level is used by everyone at some time or another, it is the same as day-dreaming, or getting lost in a book or movie, you are fully engrossed in what you are doing but are still aware of surroundings and can dip in and out of this level of consciousness. We quite often do this when performing routine tasks. eg: walking the dog, washing dishes, ironing, your mind is focused on something else, you are using automatic pilot.

Theta Level:
This level happens at sleep where we experience rapid eye movement (REM). When not asleep, this level acts as a creative and receptive level where the individual is able to accept positive suggestions without the critical faculty interfering.
