Time – Does It Exist in the Universe?
Time – it seems to be the governor of not only our life but our entire existence. But does time really exist or is it just a measure that we use to organise the events of our day, our night, our past, present and future?
We created a rule, and we called it a ruler or a measure (in English), it is a tool to help us to understand, comprehend and explain the size of something, that may be how long it is, how wide it is, how deep it is; it helps us to understand and to comprehend through comparison.
In our linear life we have done exactly that with time, we have created a rule, a measure, so that we can organise our life, our years, months, days and so forth right down to a second and less. We have created a rule called ‘time’ and we have built our lives in such a way that we rely heavily on knowing the exact time. We have become so dependent on it, we need it to get up in time for work, it often governs when we eat, we often rely on it to bake a cake or a loaf of bread. But does time actually exist?
For me personally, time in the true sense of what it means for us today does not exist other than on this plane of existence and within our own lives.
In the past, and even today, some people arise in the morning when the sun comes up or when daylight breaks, and they go to bed after the sun has set or when darkness sets in, they are not goverened by a ticking clock. In the past, meals were not necessarily planned for a specific time of day other than perhaps when the sun was at a certain place in the sky, or at its highest.
If we look to nature we can see that what she shows us is that natural time is measured by the sun, the moon, and the seasons. Winter shows us that it is time to rest more, time to let go of what no longer serves us, she shows us that it is time for introspection, for going within, a time to slow down and hibernate, perhaps not literally, but it offers us the time to be still. Spring shows us that it is the time for new growth, for the seeds that were sown within us during winter to start to bud, spring offers us hope for what is to come, it is a time of nurturing the new growth within and waking us up, ready for summer. As we start to awaken from our resting period we gain the needed strength and stamina for summer, summer shows us that that is the time for the things in our life to flourish, to bloom, to grow, and is a good time for building on those new projects, when the body and mind is rested and renewed. Autumn shows us that it is time to start to look at what we have done, what we have accomplished, and to start to look at what is dwindling, what just needs a rest and what is ready to be released. Nature offers us so much in relation to time. But it isn’t linear time, it is nature’s natural time, it is the beat of nature’s clock which isn’t set in stone like linear time. The sun does not rise at the same time every day, nor does it set at the same time every evening.
I have to ask myself, what have we done to our lives? why have we made them so dependent upon linear time? have we left any time for nature’s time?
Anyone who knows me well knows that I don’t run my life purely around linear time, yes it has its purpose, but for me, being closer to nature and permitting myself to organise my day on a daily basis on nature’s time permits me to be able to listen to my inner clock, I rest when I feel I need it, and I push on when I feel that my energy drives me onwards. That may mean that I am writing in the early hours when all around is still, when the fresh night air fills my lungs, when most people’s energy is more settled, more calm, and the atmosphere is filled more with the silence of the night, the chatter of birds, when the sun is sleeping (well she is not really sleeping, but it sounds picturesque) and the moonlight is dancing through the window. 2am to 4am are amazing times to be awake, I can get so much writing done at those times. It is a wonderful time to sit in the stillness of the night and just be, no have to’s no must do’s no linear time, just nature’s time. I refuse to have a diary full of must do’s and have to’s. I try to live each day naturally and organically. I don’t eat breakfast, lunch and dinner, I don’t actually eat three meals a day, I eat once, sometimes twice. I eat when I feel too, which happens to be anywhere between 11am and 3pm.
We look at our life as past, present and future. But what if all those things are here, in the here and now, all together? If you put a pile of papers into a folder and separate them, we do so to organise them, but in reality, they are all there, all at the same time even though we call the papers we see first as being either more recent or older, depending on how we organise them. But we call them new and old, yet if we take the dividers out, they are all still the same. Is life not like that? Is nature’s time not like that? Does nature not have her own time, her own inbuilt clock that isn’t measuring what we call time. Does the flower decide it is the right time to bloom based on linear time, or does it naturally bloom, from its internal clock based on environmental factors?
I am at a place in my life where I want and enjoy having less linear time, I don’t even need a clock in order to feed the dog because he lets me know when it is his regular inbuilt food time. I don’t want to be, nor have any desire to be governed by linear time, but by nature, I want to continue to live my life by nature’s rhythm and beat, I want to continue to get up when it feels right to get up, to get up with the sun and go to bed with her. I enjoy being able to be quiet, still, alone in the early hours of the night, because I am not alone but surrounded my the songs of the night, the stars, the fresh air and at times the clouds. Life is for living, but I guess what we must all ask ourselves is – are we actually living? are we in touch with our own inner clock or are we being dragged along by linear time? are we living our own life or a life that we are expected to live?
Time – it is nothing more than an illusion to keep us programmed and living a life of dogma! By all means, make time a useful tool in your busy day, but don’t become its slave. Balance your life with nature’s time. Fill your life with beauty and peace because you deserve it. We were not placed on the earth to become enslaved to a pocket watch. Use linear time as it was intended, to help us to organise our day, not be enslaved to our day.
